PlayStation is the latest gaming company to be sued for discrimination

What's the fuss?

Lately, incumbent gaming corporations have been hit with serious lawsuits citing gender discrimination and inequality against women. PlayStation is the latest target, and it could be a big one.

The situation

The video game industry has rightly been marred for being a boys' club, in which many have began to speak out against these practices.

• Amongst the largest outcries has been against Activision Blizzard, who have been put on trial by numerous different groups for discrimination and sexual harassment within the workplace.
• Negligence from the top has been so bad that hundreds of employees staged a walkout in protest against the company's CEO, who reportedly was aware of these transgressions beforehand.

Now, a former employee has sued PlayStation for discrimination and wrongful termination.

• The plaintiff, a former IT security analyst, alleges that Sony was in violation of the United States' Equal Pay Act and that she was terminated for speaking out regarding discrimination against women.

• She also noted that other female employees found it much harder to get promoted at the same rate as their male counterparts.

Boiling it down

Inclusivity efforts has so far not kept up with the modern gaming workplace.

• In a few short years, female and transgender game developers has seen a rise of 12% with men making up approximately 61% of the workplace. 
• Historically, men have dominated the gaming space, which is likely why such disheartening practices have become engrained in gaming workplace culture.

PlayStation (and Sony) should be quite worried.

• Although it has only started with a single lawsuit, this could be the catalyst for more - including class actions.
• Given that PlayStation has more exposure than others in its caliber (i.e. games, consoles, software, etc.), there's more to lose.
