Tomb Raider reboot trilogy has sold almost half of franchise's lifetime sales

This story about consumption, boiled down, in 1:12 minutes.

What's the fuss?

One of the best treasure-hunting adventure game franchises has sold a lot of copies, mostly thanks to its rebooted trilogy. Gaming has come a long way.

The situation

Since 1996, Tomb Raider has been a landmark video game series where the player is put in the shoes of legendary treasure hunter Lara Croft.

The owner of the franchise, Square Enix, sold Tomb Raider off to a Swedish video game holding company amongst others in a $300 million deal.

  • Alongside the sale, Square Enix revealed that Tomb Raider has sold 88 million units since 1996.
  • Among this, 38 million (or 43%) unit sales have been thanks to the franchise's reboot trilogy.

Boiling it down

Higher sales for the franchise's modern trilogy is a byproduct of positive trends in gaming consumption.

Many have preached that single-player gaming is "dead", however Tomb Raider has proved the contrary.

  • There is clearly a strong demand for narrative-driven, single-player gaming experiences in a world where live-service multiplayer games (i.e. Fortnite) make the headlines.
