PlayStation's showcase was heavy on the exclusives

What's the fuss?

PlayStation gave us a tease of what upcoming games they had in store for fans with new gameplay and surprising announcements. With a majority of games revealed being exclusive, PlayStation sure knows how to generate excitement.

The situation

For the first time in over a year, PlayStation pleased fans with a jam-packed 40 minute showcase regarding what games we can expect in the years to come.

From brand new IPs to first-glimpse gameplay of highly anticipated games, there is certainly much for gamers to be excited about, including (but not exhaustive to):

• Numerous remakes, including a surprise remake of a legendary Star Wars video game, releasing as a timed exclusive for PlayStation 5 and PC.
• Some superhero games, including Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man 2, and Wolverine - enough to excite any Marvel fan.
• A new highly anticipated IP called Forspoken showed off gameplay of its fast-action combat, including high-octane spellcasting.
• An "upside-down digital/analogue universe" from the band Radiohead titled Kid A  Mnesiac.
• Exciting first glimpses into the finely detailed racing franchise Gran Turismo and the sequel to Nordic-inspired God of War.

Boiling it down

If gamers love PlayStation for anything, it's for their exclusives. 

• Being able to play the hottest games only on PlayStation is a huge driver for gamers to pick their brand over other competitors.
• Many of the exclusives presented in the showcase were for long established franchises, perhaps indicating a heavy reliance on "safe bets" to recoup rising development costs.

Gamers will have to wait to play many of these games in 2022 and beyond. 

• Although it's uncertain if the later release dates are due to the effects of COVID on game production, the fact is that PlayStation will not have any major releases this holiday season - a coveted time for game companies.
