Excitement for the new Call of Duty seems to not be for the actual game

What's the fuss?

The trailer for the new Call of Duty just dropped and it's gotten people rather excited, but mainly for the features that don't affect the game itself.

The situation

One of the main reasons the first-person shooter franchise Call of Duty is a household name is because a new iteration releases every single year.

Each Call of Duty game is usually set in a different time period and is created by a different developer, both contributing to each game's unique style and aesthetic.
Lately, these iterations have been connected through the franchise's battle royale mode, Warzone, which incorporates certain elements of each game such as the type of guns available to players.

The next game in the franchise, dubbed Call of Duty: Vanguard, brings the series back to World War II.

Despite the fanfare, many Call of Duty fans are not excited about the game itself at all, dubbing it a boring "copy and paste" from previous iterations.
The November release of the game also brings a new map and an anticheat system to Warzone, which is where the real excitement is stemming from.

Boiling it down

The sheer popularity of Call of Duty makes it largely uncontested when it comes to selling itself to first-person shooter (FPS) gamers.

However, with its most serious competitor Battlefield also releasing in the same time frame, FPS fans may be picking sides this time.
Battlefield 2042 is extremely anticipated as it is the first game in the franchise to be released in three years, which may have contributed to a lackluster response for Call of Duty: Vanguard.

Currently, Warzone is Call of Duty's cash cow with over 100 million players.

Lately, millions of gamers and streamers alike have disavowed the game due to cheaters running rampant, moving to other battle royale games.
With the announced anti-cheat system, the developers have finally answered the pleas from gamers, but it may be too late.
