Xbox continues to outsell PlayStation in Japan

For the first time in 20 years, Microsoft's Xbox is a true contender to Sony's PlayStation in the Japanese market. Fluke or actual progress?

Borne of a Japanese company, the PlayStation has been favoured by Japanese gamers for its catalogue of games being more closely aligned to their tastes.
In turn, Xbox has suffered in the region - only selling 2.3 million consoles in Japan in its 20 year history.

Xbox is starting to outsell PlayStation in Japan for the first time ever, largely because of supply chain issues that have led to poor production output of the PlayStation 5.

Xbox outsold PlayStation by almost 3:1 in early June, outstripping their Japanese performance in early May of outselling PlayStation by 2:1.

It's easy to assume that this boost in sales from the North American based Xbox is temporary, but this may not entirely be the case.

Japanese gamers have been frustrated with PlayStation due to recent antics that seem to favour the North American gaming market.
Such disposition has led to Japanese PlayStation 5 sales being disappointing at launch, as well as paving the way for Nintendo to take a commanding lead of the Japanese gaming market.

Japanese Xbox gamers wanted to buy a Xbox, not needed to buy a Xbox.

The head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, has been quite public as to Xbox's plans in better catering to Japanese audiences.
This includes adding more Japanese games to Xbox's catalogue, such as the Persona series, as well as collaborating with legendary Japanese developers.
