BioShock movie announced at Netflix

BioShock movie announced at Netflix

This story about more game adaptations, boiled down, in 1:03 minutes.

What's the fuss?

One of the best narrative video games ever is getting a movie adaptation at Netflix. Best to approach with caution.

The situation

2007's Bioshock takes place in an alternate reality where the world's brightest minds and society's elite live in an underwater utopia in order to flourish outside of government control.

  • Eventually, unchecked ambition drives advancements and gives rise to maniacal psychopaths - causing society to collapse.
  • The player gets dropped into this world (quite literally) to solve its mysteries and find out the truth about the player's connection with this utopia.

The game is widely regarded as one of the best narrative experiences of all time, so much so that Netflix has announced a movie adaptation is in the works.

  • The movie has been in development at Netflix for about a year, with currently no writer or director involved.
  • A BioShock movie was to be developed in 2007, but the project was shelved due to its budget and R-rating.

Boiling it down

Video game adaptations are all the rage right now.

Video game movies have historically been of poor quality, so much so that most are considered critical and commercial failures.

  • The issue with these adaptations is that they often stray away from the game's narrative themes, focusing on tired movie tropes rather than staying true to the game's plot.
  • Although Netflix has a good track record, hopefully they do BioShock justice.
