What's the fuss?

One the biggest annual video game conferences is in full swing, giving us a glimpse of what to expect in the coming months.

The situation

Hosted by well-known industry journalist Geoff Keighley, Gamescom 2021 resumed its week of announcements with a special virtual showcase called Opening Night Live

  • The show gave us a glorious 2-hour glimpse, including trailers and interviews, into what games we can expect in the coming months.

From predictable sequels to surprising reboots, there is certainly much for gamers to be excited about, including (but not exhaustive to):

Boiling it down

Gamescom set the tone for the fall gaming season.

  • If this line-up is any indication, the wide variety of genres to be released in the latter half of the year should please a wide variety of gamers.
  • Specifically, there seems to be a focus on mobile and live-service games, which are pretty aligned with modern gaming trends.

More than a year later, COVID-19 has still been disruptive to the industry. 

  • Not only did it delay many of these projects but it has still forced trade shows such as Gamescom to be solely virtual.
