Intel has entered the GPU wars in a big way

What's the fuss?

New challenger approaching! After so many years, a new player has entered into the graphics card space who certainly has the resources to be competitive.

The situation

If tech companies made up a singular family, Intel would be a grandfather.

• Founded in 1968, the semiconductor company's products are found in almost every single PC on the planet to this day.
• Historically, Intel is known for its central processing units (CPUs) which is simply the key component that makes computers run.

Among the numerous announcements at CES 2022, details on Intel's new line of graphic processing units (GPUs) stood out from the crowd.

• Originally announced earlier this year, Intel's "Arc" brand of GPUs touts very competitive features compared to its rivals while offering technology that makes them run more efficiently.
• High profile game studios, such as Ubisoft and Kojima Productions, have committed to supporting the new line of GPU in their own games when it releases within the next few months.

Boiling it down

GPUs are just as important as CPUs, especially when it comes to gaming.

• GPUs are the physical engines in computers that powers the video games we play, which must become more powerful as game graphics become more advanced.
• These things aren't cheap either, and coupled with soaring demand they make the companies behind them a ton of money.

The GPU landscape is currently dominated by two players: Nvidia and AMD.

• Although products from both companies provide their own unique benefits, their basic and most important functions remain generally the same.
  
• It's too early to tell whether Intel's line of GPUs will stand apart, but more competition is good for consumers nonetheless.
