Gotham Knights no longer releasing on last gen consoles

Gotham Knights no longer releasing on last gen consoles

This story about outdated tech, boiled down, in 1:35 minutes.

What's the fuss?

An upcoming game based on The Caped Crusader's sidekicks will no longer release on last-gen consoles. Are PlayStation 4's and Xbox One's finally kicking the can?

The situation

Gotham Knights is an upcoming action game that puts players in the shoes of Batman's various sidekicks over the years including Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, and Red Hood.

  • The game takes place after Batman's death, where his supporting roster must restore justice to Gotham City as crime begins to climb as a result.
  • Gotham Knights will release this year on PC as well as the latest generation of PlayStation and Xbox consoles in October.

Gamers still playing on the previous generation of consoles (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) will be disappointed that Gotham Knights will no longer release on those platforms.

  • The title's publisher recently announced that this became the case in order "to provide the best gameplay experience" with no other explanation.
  • Until this announcement, the game was planned to be released on last gen consoles.

Boiling it down

"The best gameplay experience" likely revolves around game performance, which is much more impressive on current generation consoles.

  • The new(ish) PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles are more powerful than their older counterparts, able to push higher frames per second and support enhanced graphical capabilities.
  • During development, it's likely the game either didn't perform well and/or didn't look very good when testing on last gen consoles.

Many recently released games still offer a version to cater to last generation consoles.
