PlayStation celebrates Japanese game makers with State of Play

What's the fuss?

PlayStation gave us another tease of upcoming games they had in store for fans, this time with a focus on games made by Japanese studios.

The situation

PlayStation hit fans with a jam-packed 20ish minute showcase featuring new trailers of games we can expect in the years to come.

From brand new IPs to first-glimpse gameplay of highly anticipated games, there is certainly much for gamers to be excited about including (but not exhaustive to):

• New IP called Exoprimal, which looks to be a survival game where players fend off hordes of zomb- I mean dinosaurs.
• A surprising demo release today for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, a Souls-like game set in the world of the 35-year-old franchise Final Fantasy.
• New gameplay glimpse for Forspoken, a new IP that features fast-action combat and high-octane spellcasting.
• A fighting game based on the world-famous anime JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, releasing later this year.
• A content update for the well-received sci-fi third-person shooter Returnal, adding free co-op multiplayer and survival modes.
• Brand new role-playing games from famed studio Square Enix, including an anime-style action game aptly named Valkyrie Elysium.

Boiling it down

PlayStation brought it home with this showcase.

• The PlayStation brand began in Sony's Japanese headquarters in 1991 and primarily served the Japanese market until its outreach to other territories in 1995.
• Given Xbox is starting to become more competitive in Japan by better catering to Japanese tastes, PlayStation may have wanted to reiterate their commitment to the region.

Viewers have rated the showcase as a passable "meh".

• Learning from the past, PlayStation played down the hyped about the showcase by simply stating it would highlight great games from Japanese publishers - nothing more.
